Vacancies are further categorized based on social and demographic reservation criteria, including General, Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Castes (Arunthathiyars), Scheduled Tribes, Differently Abled Persons, Ex-Servicemen, Women, and Persons Studied in Tamil Medium.
Reservation Details
Reservation is applicable as per Tamil Nadu Government rules. A detailed distribution of vacancies includes:

Additionally, 4% of the total posts are reserved horizontally for differently-abled candidates with various physical disabilities such as Loco-motor Disability, Leprosy Cured, Cerebral Palsy, Dwarfism, Muscular Dystrophy, Acid Attack victims, and Specific Learning Disorder. Ex-servicemen and women are also given due reservation as per government rules.
Age Limit
- Maximum Age for General Candidates: 37 years as of 1st July 2025
- Differently Abled Candidates: 47 years
- Ex-Servicemen: 48 years
- No Maximum Age Limit: SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DNC, BC, BCM categories, including ex-servicemen belonging to these communities
- Note: Applicants must not be serving in any Union or State Government service unless they fulfill specific exceptions mentioned in the recruitment rules.
Age relaxation provisions are also extended to differently-abled candidates and ex-servicemen. Candidates are advised to carefully verify their eligibility concerning age before applying.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must hold the following qualifications:
- Basic Medical Degree (MBBS) from a recognized university or institution approved by the University Grants Commission and the National Medical Commission (NMC).
- Additional Qualifications: Postgraduate medical qualifications (MD/MS/DNB/Diploma/Diploma in DNB/Superspeciality MCh) relevant to the speciality applied for:
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology: MD/MS/DNB/ MCh (Obstetrics & Gynaecology)
- Radiology: MD/DNB in Radiology
- Forensic Medicine: MD/DNB in Forensic Medicine
- Geriatrics: MD/DNB in Geriatrics
- Cardiothoracic Surgery: MCh/DNB (Cardiothoracic Surgery)
- Registration: Candidates must be registered practitioners under the Tamil Nadu Medical Council and have completed one year as House Surgeon/CRRI.
- Tamil Eligibility: Candidates must pass the Tamil Eligibility Test (SSLC Standard) with a minimum of 40% marks, conducted alongside the competitive examination. Marks in this test are qualifying and not counted toward the final selection.
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or of Indian origin from specified countries intending permanent settlement in India. Necessary eligibility certificates may be required for non-Indian citizens.

Selection Process
The selection process for Assistant Surgeon posts involves:
- Computer-Based Examination (CBE):
- 100 objective type questions
- Conducted at the undergraduate medical level
- Qualifying marks to be determined and communicated by MRB
- Tamil Eligibility Test: Minimum qualifying marks of 40%
- Certificate Verification: Verification of all educational, professional, and reservation-related documents.
- Final Appointment: Based on merit in examination and verification of eligibility criteria.
